IBM preparing dual-core G5

eWeek claims (in this article) that it is code-named Antares. IBM will likely call it the 970MP, but in the end, it's like two, two, two chips in one.

Taking a page from the book of the bigger brothers to the 970, the Power4, IBM appears to be planning on beating megahertz with more raw power per clock cycle by putting two of the central cores of the processor on the same chip.

The chip, which is said to be over 154 square mm in size, will be large, fast and produce a lot of heat. But, will it add the performance boost that people have been looking for once the megahertz wars started to wane?

We'll see... not to be outdone, the folks at Intel and AMD are both slated to bring out dual-core CPUs in the same timeframe.
